Drifting begins when traction breaks and the vehicle continues forward: its wheels indicate one direction while the weight of its body carries it laterally elsewhere, within a rapidly shifting temporality. As rubber slides against asphalt and momentum pulls the machine towards the edge of its movement, control does not disappear completely, but persists through a sequence of corrections made within a course that can no longer be fully governed.

DRIFT investigates spatiality and material environments through the volatility of motor racing, using the act of drifting as a material model through which to consider freedom in relation to control, weight, friction, violence, slyness, eroticism and death.

From the Situationist dérive to the present condition of continuous movement, drifting has evolved from a method of escaping prescribed routes into a condition increasingly shaped by the systems it once sought to evade. What begins as lateral movement through space becomes an ontology of continual displacement, in which movement no longer simply follows structure, but participates in its ongoing production.

In Postscript on the Societies of Control, Gilles Deleuze distinguishes the fixed enclosures of disciplinary society from a form of control understood through continuous modulation: “a self-deforming cast that will continually change from one moment to the other.” Within this condition, the subject is no longer formed once and retained within a stable institution, but is instead measured, adjusted and recalibrated in real time. Access becomes temporary, identity divisible and evaluation permanent. Deleuze's figure for this condition is therefore not confinement but undulation: the individual who remains “in orbit, in a continuous network,” moving through a system without visible walls, yet without a stable position from which an exterior can be reached.

Paul Virilio argued that the invention of any technology is also the invention of its particular accident: “When you invent the ship, you also invent the shipwreck.” In his account, the accident is produced alongside the intended function of an object and cannot be removed without altering the object itself. Speed therefore implies collision, just as architecture implies collapse; a structure built to transport, organise or protect bodies simultaneously establishes the conditions under which those bodies may be obstructed, exposed or immobilised.

J. G. Ballard's Crash (1970) extends this proposition into the realm of the erotic — approaching the vehicle crash not simply as a destructive event, but as a "perversely erotic fusion of human flesh and machine libido” — a violent catalyst for a new kind of modern sexuality.

Following CARE’s spatial framework, DRIFT examines the tension, volatility and eroticism contained within this temporal action as a metaphor for one's relationship to control, release and freedom. Friction is central throughout the exhibition, preventing movement from dissolving into abstraction and returning it to the point where velocity encounters matter and power encounters the body. What remains is the residue of contact: violence, heat, noise and abrasion.

To drift is simultaneously to generate damage and maintain grip. This contradiction emerges through the relationship between DRIFT’s spatial methodology and the material strength of the works within the exhibition. The act of maintaining movement requires resistance; control is not the absence of friction but its continual negotiation.

For this reason, DRIFT does not present the loss of control as a form of liberation. It occupies the interval before this contradiction is resolved: beginning when an intended trajectory has already failed and ending before that failure can be stabilised, interpreted and reorganised into a new order. What this interval contains is a series of provisional corrections, through which materials, bodies and images continue to move sideways through the systems designed to carry them forward.
